What’s a piece of technology you’re convinced will exist in 20 years?

If you asked me what technology I’m absolutely convinced will exist within the next 20 years, my answer might surprise you.

I’m a lifelong Star Trek fan (yes, a proud Trekkie), and while I don’t think we’ll be warping across the galaxy anytime soon, I do believe one prediction from science fiction is much closer than most people realize.

I think we’ll all be connected through some form of implantable or wearable technology.

Before you picture the Borg from Star Trek marching down your street saying, “Resistance is futile,” hear me out.

Today, we already carry smartphones that know our location, monitor our health, unlock our homes, start our cars, and connect us instantly with anyone in the world. Smartwatches track our heart rate, sleep patterns, blood oxygen levels, and even detect falls. The next logical step isn’t carrying technology—it’s wearing it more seamlessly or even integrating it into our bodies.

Imagine a tiny implant or advanced wearable that could:

• Unlock your front door.
• Start your vehicle.
• Replace your wallet and credit cards.
• Monitor your health 24/7.
• Translate languages in real time.
• Authenticate your identity without passwords.
• Connect you instantly to AI assistants.

It sounds futuristic, but many of these technologies already exist in early forms today.

As a real estate agent, I also wonder how this technology could change our homes. Imagine walking up to your front door, and it recognizes you instantly. Your lights turn on, the thermostat adjusts to your preferred temperature, your favorite music begins playing, and your coffee starts brewing—all without touching a button.

The smart home of tomorrow may not just recognize your phone—it may recognize you.

Of course, this kind of technology raises important questions about privacy, security, and ethics. Just because we can build something doesn’t always mean we should. Those conversations will become just as important as the technology itself.

Whether the future looks more like Star Trek or something entirely different, one thing is certain: technology is evolving faster than ever, and I’m excited to see where it takes us.
